Hey friends, welcome to the first post of my first ever devlog! I'm not sure where I should begin, but an overview of my goals for this game and where it's currently at makes the most sense to me.

What's the Deal with RetroVania (placeholder title)?
RetroVania is primarily a way for me to learn my way around the Godot game engine. I've been intrigued with it for a while, and after coming across Anokolisa's Legacy Vania tiles, I thought "Hey, I bet replicating those classic action/platformer games would be a great way to learn the engine and build some proper game development experience." Specifically, I'm looking to replicate the feeling of the Castlevania titles that released before Symphony of the Night, which is a different beast entirely.

What's the Situation?
At this point, I've been building the mechanical foundations of RetroVania for the past couple weeks, and it's been a blast. We're currently working with:

  • The PC, who can:
    • Jump
    • Walk
    • Crouch
    • Attack while jumping, crouching, and walking
    • Die
  • A Skeleton, who can:
    • Walk all the way across the screen (pending any encountered ledges)
    • Pace back and forth within a territory
    • Throw a bone, with distance based on their proximity to the player
    • Jump while throwing a bone
    • Automatically turn to face the player
    • Die (their bone can also be destroyed with an attack)
  • A floating skull, who can:
    • Float.. float across the screen.
    • Die
  • A Test Stage
    • This is the area that I'm using for the first screen of the game. It's currently letting me test all the mechanics of my game and make sure the core is working before I build out the entire stage. I'm building the levels in https://ldtk.io and importing them into Godot. If you're developing a 2D game, I highly recommend checking out LDtk, it's brilliant.

And that's what we got going on. You can expect an update every week, because 90% of my free time is going into this and I'm having a ton of fun. Let me know if there's anything you're interested in or want to hear and I'll make sure to include it in the future. =)

Castlevania is one of my favorite franchises. Im looking forward to seeing what comes out of this.

I grew up playing a lot of Bloodlines since I didn't have any Nintendo console till 64, but it's been a blast going back to play 1, 3 and 4!
